× This research is aimed at finding out whether: (1) authentic materials are more effective than non-authentic materials to teach listening; (2) students who have high self-confidence have better listening skill than those who have low self-confidence; (3) there is an interaction effect between authenticity of learning materials and students’ self-confidence on the students’ listening skill. Experimental research is used in this research. The population is the ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Pucakwangi in the 2011/2012 academic year. It consists of 221 students. The sampling technique applied in the research is cluster random sampling. The sample used in this research is 36 students from class IX A as the experimental class and 36 students from IX B used as the control class. There two instruments used to collect the data in the research, those are test and questionnaire. The test is applied to measure the students’ listening skill and questionnaire is used to measure students’ level of self-confidence. The test and the questionnaire are first tried out to know the validity and the reliability of the instruments. The data collected are analyzed using Lilliefors for computing the normality and chi-square test to find out the homogenenity. The data obtained then analyzed using ANOVA 2x2 or F-test. The ANOVA test is followed by Tukey test to know the difference of the means between groups. The critical value used in this research is =0.05 level of significance. Based on the result of the research, the findings are: (1) authentic materials are more effective than non-authentic materials to teach listening; (2) students who have high self-confidence have better listening skill than those who have low self-confidence; (3) there is no interaction effect between authenticity of learning materials and students’ self-confidence on the students’ listening skill. Referring to the findings above, it can be concluded that authentic materials are effective for teaching listening on narrative text to the ninth grade students of SMP N 1 Pucakwangi. Therefore, it is suggested that: (1) it is better for teachers to employ as many as possible authentic listening text for teaching listening on narrative text; (2) the students must face authentic listening materials as challenging learning process not as a hinder in the learning process; (3) the other researchers who would like to conduct related research can use the result of the study as a reference.
