Mixed-gender Jum’ah prayer/ Friday prayer conducted by Amina Wadud on 18 March 2005 in New York had triggered various responses from the Western and Islamic world. Newspapers in Islamic world mostly gave their negative response toward her action as woman imam (religious leader) and put her as transgressor. However, it is interesting to note that American newspapers did not blame her for leading mixed-gender Jum’ah prayer. This depiction is not common because American media usually depict feminist movement negatively. Thus, this deviation leads me to conduct a research to describe how American media construct Amina Wadud as a woman religious leader. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research that uses three online news articles from The New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com), Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com), and Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com) as the source of data. The primary data are words, phrases, sentences, and expressions in the online news text related to the research. To support the primary data, secondary data are used in the form of related articles in other newspapers, commentaries, journals, books, etc. This research is conducted under the framework of American Studies. Thus, it also incorporates various theories and approaches 1 Mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris dengan NIM C0306061 2 Dosen Pembimbing to analyze the news texts. This research employs feminist perspective and Islamic perspective toward woman religious leader, socio-cultural approach, and semiotics theory to answer the research question. The analysis shows that American media have different tendency in presenting feminist movement in Islam. Commonly, American media tend to trivialize and to demonize feminist movement in America. However, this research finds that in responding feminist movement in Islam, American media show positive reaction toward Muslim feminist. In this case, Amina Wadud is depicted in favorable ways because she is considered as reformer within centuries of Islamic tradition which caused women’s inferiority and violated women’s rights. Amina Wadud is depicted within the perspective of American mainstream as she goes with West’s struggle for gender equality and social justice.
