× The main objectives of the research are: (1) Whether Task-based Language Teaching can improve the second year students’ reading comprehension at SMPN I Plaosan; and (2) To know the strengths and weaknesses of teaching reading using Task-based Language Teaching. The subject of the research was second grade students of SMP N 1 Plaosan, Magetan in the academic year of 2011/2012. The researcher conducted a classroom action research. The action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of six steps: identifying initial ideas, reconnaissance, constructing general plan, implementing action, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation,questionnaire, interview, and test. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher applied a descriptive statistics. It was used to compare the mean score of the pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was conducted in the pre-research while the post-test was conducted at the end of cycle 1 and 2. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher analyzed the results of observation, questionnaire, and interview using Constant Comparative Method. The results of the research shows that applying TBLT in the process of teaching and learning reading can solve the students’ problem in comprehending text. The teaching and learning process became interesting, and the students had motivation to follow the class. The the result of the tests shows that TBLT can improve the students’ ability in comprehending text. The improvement can be proved by comparing the mean score of the pre-test and post-test in cycle 1 and 2. The results of observation, questionnaire, and interview showed that: the strengths of TBLT in reading class were (1) the students’ prior knowledge improved; (2) the students enjoyed the English lesson; (3) the students were creative and motivated; (4) the students’ language skills improved, not only reading skill but also other skills, such as speaking and writing; (5) the students became more active individually and in pairs; (6) the students’ confidence increased. The weakness as in using TBLT is the class was noisy, since the students discussed with their partners to do the tasks and asked their teacher if they found difficulties in doing the tasks. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that applying TBLT can improve students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, it is recommended that the teachers can use TBLT as a good alternative method to improve the students’ reading comprehension.
