Methods Used in Teaching Reading Descriptive Text to The First Year Students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Surakarta in 2011-2012 Academic Years

× This final project is written based on the job training which has been done in SMP Islam Diponegoro Surakarta for eight weeks. The writer had an opportunity to teach English lesson for the seventh grader and focused on teaching reading descriptive text. The objectives of this final project report are to describe the methods used to teach, to find out the problems faced and to give solution to the problems in teaching reading descriptive text to the first year students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Surakarta in 2011-2012 academic years. The subject of this final project report was the seventh grade students in special program. They were chosen because they have good performance in academics. The English teaching and learning activities consist of four parts: Building Knowledge of The Field (BKOF), Modeling of The Text (MOT), Join Construction of The Text (JCOT), and Independent Construction of The Text (ICOT). I get three points in the conclusion according to the job training that has been done in SMP Islam Diponegoro Surakarta. The first point is there are two methods used by the writer in teaching reading descriptive to the first year students of SMP Islam Diponegoro Suarakarta. The first method is Audio Lingual Method (ALM) and the second method is Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The second point is the problems faced by the writer are (a) the writer found difficulties in managing the students in the class, (b) the students have low motivation in learning English, and (c) each student has different capability in receiving the material. The third point is the strategies to overcome the problems i.e. (a) the writer walks around the class in order to get attention from the students, (b) the writer needs more energy to motivate the students in learning English by creating good relationship between the writer and the students, and (c) the writer should explain the material until the students understand.
