×The objectives of the research are: 1) to identify whether MURDER is more effective than Grammar Translation Method to teach reading to the eighth year students of SMP N 2 Bae,Kudus in the academic year of 2011/2012; 2) to identify whether the students who have high motivation have better reading comprehension than those who have low motivation of the eighth year students of SMP N 2 Bae, Kudus in the academic year of 2011/2012; 3) to prove whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and motivation in teaching reading to the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Bae, Kudus in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The research was conducted at SMP N 2 Bae, Kudus in the academic year of 2011/2012 from August-December 2011. The population in this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Bae, Kudus. The total number of sample is 64 students coming from two classes. The sampling of the research is cluster random sampling. It is because using this sampling enables her to pick up a sub group from a larger group then use this subgroup as a basis for making judgements about the larger group. The sample are VIII A as the experimental group and VIII B as the control group which each consists of 32 students. To split the students’ learning motivation levels, the median-split method is used. The writer used normality test, homogeneity test in order to check whether or not the two groups were in normal distribution and homogeneous.
The research design used is ANOVA and Tuckey. The findings of this research show: 1) MURDER is more effective than Grammar Translation Method in teaching reading to the eighth year students of SMP N 2 Bae, Kudus in the academic year of 2011/ 2012. Based on the mean score of reading comprehension, the students who are taught by using MURDER or A1 is 72.06 while those who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method or A2 is 66.25; 2); the students having high motivation have better reading comprehension than those having low motivation. Based on the mean score of students’ motivation, the students who have high motivation or B1 is 72.53 while those who have low motivation or B2 is 65.78; 3); there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ motivation.
Finally, the research findings imply that the use of MURDER can foster the students’ reading comprehension. The evidence in this research indicate that the students’ reading comprehension. The evidence in this research indicate that the students teaught using MURDER have better reading comprehension than those taught using GTM. Therefore, it is recommended for English teacher to apply MURDER in reading class.
