× The aims of the research on improving the students’ reading ability of class VIIIF SMPN 2 Barat are to reveal : (1) whether inquiry-based teaching and learning can improve students’ reading ability at class VIIIF SMP Negeri 2 Barat; and (2) the advantages and disadvantages of inquiry-based teaching and learning to teach reading at class VIIIF SMP Negeri 2 Barat. The problem in this research is the low reading comprehension of Class VIIIF of SMPN 2 Barat – Magetan that is caused by the internal factor from the students themselves and from external factors such as, teaching techniques that are used by the teacher. The teachers in SMPN 2 Barat never use study groups or pairs in teaching reading. The writer finds out that there are gaps among the students. Only some students have good achievements and are active to follow the teaching-learning process and the others are passive. Most of them are sleepy, bored, not enthusiastic to follow the teaching and learning process. So, the interaction in the class is low. The research was conducted from Nopember 2011 to January 2012 in Class VIIIF of SMPN 2 Barat – Magetan. The subject of the research is 30 students consisting of 20 male and 10 female students. The procedure of the research consists of planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, and reflecting the action. In collecting the data, the researcher uses observation, interview, questionnaire, and test technique. In this research, the researcher uses the multiple choice test for both pre-test and post-test. There are two techniques in analyzing the data, they are quantitative and qualitative analysis. The quantitative data is analyzed using descriptive statistics. The qualitative data is analyzed using framework developed by Mills (2000: 99) consisting of the following steps: data reduction, data display, and data verification. The results of the research shows that Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning Method can improve students’ reading comprehension in terms of: the achievement in reading comprehension increases and students are able to comprehend a text well. The improvement of the students’ reading comprehension skill can be seen from the average score of pre-test and post-test. The average score of pre-test is 57.47, the average score of post-test 1 is 68.87, and the average score of post-test 2 is 82.67. Inquiry-Based Teaching and Learning Method can improve the teaching and learning process, such as: making the classroom atmosphere alive , making the students active to follow the teaching and learning process, making students’ personal competence, and making independent learning. It is hoped that the result of study can be useful for teachers to determine and select the suitable teaching method for their students.
