×This thesis is to find out whether the use of four square writing method can
improve the students‟ writing skill of the eleventh grade students of social 4 of
SMA N 1 Kartasura in the academic year of 2011/2012 and to describe the
classroom situation when applying four square writing method in the teaching
writing of the eleventh grade students of social 4 of SMA N 1 Kartasura in the
academic year of 2011/2012.
The method used in this research is a classroom action research at the
Senior High School conducted by an English Teacher (K) and the researcher. The
research is conducted in two cycles from February 9th until 7th May 2012 to the
eleventh grade students of social 4 of SMA N 1 Kartasura. The research data are
collected using observation, interview, questionnaire, photographs, and tests (pretest
and post-test). The data are analyzed using the technique of analyzing the data
from Anne Burns ( 1999: 157-160), includes assembling the data, coding the data,
comparing the data, building interpretation, reporting the outcomes and
descriptive statistics. For the quantitative data, the researcher analyzed the mean
scores of the tests.
The research findings prove that four square writing method can improve
the students‟ writing skill and the classroom situation is more active and
communicative when four square writing method is implemented in the teaching
writing. The improvement of the students‟ writing skill includes: 1) the students‟
difficulty in expressing their ideas decreased, 2) the students‟ difficulty inusing
grammar decreased, 3) the students‟ vocabulary mastery increased, 4) The
students „ writing was better organized in paragraphing and also much better in
spelling and punctuation. Besides, the improvement of the students‟ writing skill
can be seen from the improvement of the mean score of pre-test, post-test I and
post-test II, that is 55.05, 70.13, 78.81. The classroom situation is also more active
and communicative. It can be seen from the several improvements such as: 1) The
students were more active during the teaching and learning process, 2) the
students paid more attention to the researcher and did not do the non academic
activities, 3) the students were brave to correct their friends‟ mistakes, 4) some
students coming forward voluntarily to read or write their work.
Four square writing method can be applied in teaching learning process.
Hopefully, by applying Four Square Writing Method, the students can improve
their writing skill. The researcher hopes that what the researcher had done will
give the English teachers inspiration to conduct Four Square Writing Method in
their classroom.
