×The purposes of the research are: (1) to prove whether the use of Project-Based
Learning (PBL) is more effective than Direct Instruction (DI) in teaching writing to the
seventh grade students of SMP N 6 Sragen in the academic year of 2011/2012; (2) to
prove out whether the students with high creativity have better writing skill than those
who have low creativity; and (3) to prove out whether there is an interaction between
teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching writing for the seventh grade of
SMP N 6 Sragen in the academic year of 2011/2012.
This research is an experimental research which was conducted at SMP N 6 Sragen
in the academic year of 2011/2012. The population was the seventh grade students which
consisted of 256 students coming from eight classes. The sample was taken by using
cluster random sampling. The sample were VII E as the experimental group and VII F as
the control group. The number of students of each class were 32 students, so there were
64 students used as sample. The instruments used to collect the data were writing test and
Verbal Creativity Test. Before the instruments were used, a try out was done to know the
readability of writing test and to know validity and reliability of Verbal Creativity Test.
The writer used normality and homogeneity test in order to check normality and
homogeneity of the sample distribution.
The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey Test. The research findings
show: (1) PBL is more effective than DI in teaching writing; (2) The students having high
creativity have better writing skill than those having low creativity; and (3) There is
interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity.
Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that teaching methods have a
strong influence on students’ writing skill. The use of PBL is more effective than DI in
teaching writing. Furthermore, PBL is more effective to teach writing for students having
high creativity, whereas DI is more effective to teach writing for students having low
creativity. It can be said that the effectiveness of teaching methods depends on the degree
of students’ creativity. Moreover, in teaching writing, English teachers are suggested to
be more creative and innovative in choosing or even mixing the appropriate teaching
methods to facilitate the students who have different characteristic especially based on
their degree of creativity.
