× The objectives of this research are: (1) to find out whether Student Teams-Achievement Divisions/STAD is better than Lecture Method for teaching listening skill; (2) to find out whether students having high self-esteem have better listening skill than those having low self-esteem; (3) to find out whether there is an interaction between the methods of teaching and students’ self-esteem in teaching listening. This research was carried out at SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura from August 2011 to October 2012. The research method used was experimental research. The independent variables in this research are the use of teaching methods (Teams-Achievement Divisions/STAD and Lecture Method) in teaching listening of oral narrative text and the attributive factor (self-esteem) while the dependent variable is listening skill. The population was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura in the academic year of 2011/2012. There are two classes in this research, the experimental class (XE) and the control class (XF). In this case, the technique used to get the sample was cluster random sampling. The technique of collecting data was a non-test (a questionnaire for self-esteem) and a test technique (listening test of oral narrative text). The questionnaire and the listening test were valid and reliable after they were tried out. In this research, the data of listening test were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance 2x2. Then, it was analyzed by using Tukey test. It is used to know the significant difference between the teaching methods. The result of inferential analysis of the data shows that there are some research findings that can be drawn. First, Student Teams-Achievement Divisions/STAD is more effective than Lecture Method for teaching listening of oral narrative text. Second, students having high self-esteem have better listening skill than the students having low self-esteem. Third, there is an interaction between the methods used and students’ self-esteem in teaching listening. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that STAD is an effective method to teach listening, and the effectiveness is affected by the level of the students’ self-esteem. In this case, it is reasonable and logical if teachers use STAD in order to facilitate students especially with high self-esteem in listening to oral narrative text so that they can listen it successfully.
