The Contribution of Vocabulary Mastery and Locus of Control Toward Reading Comprehension (A Correlational Study of the Second Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the Academic Year 2011/2012)

×This study is aimed to determine the correlation between: (1) vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the academic year of 2011/2012; (2) internal locus of control and reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the academic year of 2011/2012; (3) vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control toward reading comprehension of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The study was carried out in May 2012 at SMP Negeri 1 Puring. The method used in this study was a correlational study. The population was all of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Puring in the academic year of 2011/2012 which consists of seven classes. The total number of the students was 276 students. The sample was 40 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were tests and questionnaire. The tests were used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension, while the questionnaire was used to collect the data of internal locus of control. The technique which was used to analyze the data was Linear Regression Analysis Statistic by using SPSS 18.
The results of the study show that (1) there is a correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ reading comprehension; (2) there is a correlation between students’ internal locus of control and students’ reading comprehension; (3) there is a correlation between vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control simultaneously toward reading comprehension. The correlations within the three hypotheses are positive and significant. In addition the results show that the relative contribution of vocabulary mastery toward reading comprehension is 78.97%; the relative contribution of internal locus of control toward reading comprehension is 21.03%; the effective contribution of vocabulary mastery toward reading comprehension is 38.54%; the effective contribution of internal locus of control toward reading comprehension is 10.26%; and the total effective contribution of vocabulary mastery and internal locus of control are 48.8%.
Regarding the result of the research, it can be concluded that both vocabulary mastery and locus of control have positive contribution in reading comprehension. Therefore, students’ vocabulary mastery and locus of control should be considered in improving reading comprehension. They contribute to improve reading comprehension although reading comprehension doesn’t completely depend on the two variables.
