× The eighth grade students of SMP N 16 Surakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012 had problems dealing with writing skill. To overcome the problems, the researcher designed a classroom action research to teach writing using Picture. This research aims finding out whether using Picture can improve students‟ writing skill and how is the implementation of Picture in the writing class of the eighth grade students of SMP N 16 Surakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012. This research was carried out in class VIII B of SMP N 16 Surakarta in the academic year of 2011/2012. This research was conducted in two cycles in which in the first cycle there were three meetings, and second meetings there were two meetings. Each cycle consists of four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data are in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. To collect the qualitative data, the researcher used observation, interviews, and photographs. To collect the quantitative data, the researcher conducted test before and after implementation of the actions. The tests were pre-test and post-test. The qualitative data were analyzed by using five stages suggested by Burns (1999: 157-159) as follows: assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes. For the quantitative data, the researcher analyzed the mean scores of the tests. The results of the research show that there are positive improvements in both students writing skill and classroom situation in teaching learning process. The improvement of students‟ writing skill includes: (1) Students were able to focus their main ideas and focus their writing. They could state their idea in English and write relevant supporting ideas. They became more creative in writing. They could put more details in their writing because the use of picture is able to stimulate students‟ ideas; (2) Students were able to organize the text. Students could determine what to put first and then when writing; (3) Students were able to use proper vocabulary. Students could properly use certain adjective, noun, and verb to fit their meaning; (4) Students were able to use grammar properly. They made fewer mistakes in grammar rules; (5) Students were more concerned with the mechanical aspects of writing. They no longer neglected punctuation. They become more careful to determine the capitalized and un-capitalized words. These improvements were proved by the result of the tests. The mean scores of the test result were 30.23 for the pre-test, 65.23 for the post-test in cycle 1 and 71.43 for the post-test in cycle 2. Related to improvement in classroom situation, the research finding shows that (1) students gave more attention to the teacher‟s explanation. Their changing behavior increased their activity during the lesson. (2) Students gave more response toward the teacher‟s instruction. Students were not shy and afraid to ask when they had difficulty, because the teacher helped them to write step by step. It can be concluded that picture especially photograph is helpful to teach writing. Therefore, it is recommended that other teachers take use pictures in their teaching of writing to their students: picture works well in collaboration with appropriate method/ technique in teaching. For example in this research is guided writing.
