An Analysis of Command Expressions of The Characters in The Film Entitled The Karate Kid (Pragmatics Approach)

×ABSTRACT
This research was conducted to know about the command expressions employed by characters in the film entitled The Karate kid. It also explains the type of command strategy which is used in this film and the relationships between the command expressions and the plot structure of the story in the film (orientation, complication, and resolution) using pragmatics approach. It is a descriptive qualitative research which takes total sampling technique. The data of this research are the dialogues between the characters in the film entitled The Karate kid that contains of command expressions. The researcher analyzed 28 data containing the types of command expression related to the politeness strategies based on Brown and Levinson theory. From the analysis, the researcher found that there are 22 data (57,9%) classified into Bald On-Record strategy, 5 data (13,2%) for Bald Off-Record strategy, 10 data(26,3%) for Positive Politeness strategy and 1 data (2,6%) for Negative Politeness strategy. Related to the plot structure of the film which consists of orientation, complication, and resolution, command expression is dominantly applied in Bald-On record strategies (57,9%), in complication and resolution with the direct form. However, of the total number of 28 data, there are 16 data of orientation, 13 data of resolution, and only 9 data of complication. Therefore, command expressions are mostly applied in orientation. The reason is because in orientation, the speaker tries to threat the hearer face. To threat someone, they mostly using command expression.
