×ABSTRACT
The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1)
vocabulary mastery and student’s English achievement; (2) student’s English
interest and student’s English achievement; and (3) vocabulary mastery, student’s
English interest toward student’s English achievement.
This researcher used quantitative method, it was correlational study. The
study was carried out in April 2012 at SMP Negeri 3 Sukoharjo. The population
was all the second grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Sukoharjo which consists of
eight classes. The total number of the students was 195 students. The sample was
50 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in
collecting the data were questionnaire, test, and documentation. The questionnaire
was used to collect the data of student’s English interest; while the objective test
was used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery; and the documentation was
used to collect the data of student’s English achievement. The techniques which
were used to analyze the data were Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression
Correlation.
The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance α =
0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and student’s
English achievement (rx1y = 0.665 >rt = 0.279); (2) there is a positive correlation
between student’s English interest and student’s English achievement (rx2y =
0.640 >rt = 0.279); and (3) there is positive correlation between vocabulary
mastery, student’s English interest, and student’s English achievement (Ry12 =
0.727 and Fo = 26.367 > Ft = 3.23).
Based on the result of the study, it is known that there is a positive
correlation between vocabulary mastery and student’s English achievement. There
is a positive correlation between student’s English interest and student’s English
achievement, and there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery,
student’s English interest simultaneously andstudent’s English achievement of the
second grade students of SMP 3 Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2011/2012.
The result of this research shows that vocabulary mastery and English
interest are important factors that give contribution to student’s English
achievement. Both vocabulary mastery and English interest have positive
contribution in English achievement, it is 52.88%. So, vocabulary mastery and
student’s English interest should be considered in increasing student’s English
achievement, although the factors are not only come from those variables.
