Improving Students’ Writing Skill by Using Storytelling (A Classroom Action Research at the First Year of SMAN 3 Sukoharjo in 2011/2012 Academic Year)

×The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether and to what extent the use of storytelling improve students’ writing skill; and (2) to describe the class situation when storytelling is implemented in writing class. The preliminary research showed that the students had problems in writing elements: organization, contents, grammar, spelling, punctuations and mechanics, and vocabulary.
The research was done in SMAN 3 Sukoharjo from January – June 2012. The subject of the study was the students of X-1 consisting 39 students. The research was conducted two cycles. Each cycles consisted four meetings. The researcher used qualitative and quantiative data. The qualitative data were collected from observation, interview and questionnaire. The quantitative data were collected by using test. It was analyzed by comparing the scores of pre test (before implementing storytelling) and post test (after implementing storytelling), while the qualitative data were analyzed by using qualitative technique analysis which consists of four steps: data collection, data reduction, data display and data conclusion.
The research findings showed that there were some improvements of students; writing skill after doing the action. The improvements of students writing skill include: (1) the students can explore their ideas; (2) they aware the organization of ideas; (3) they are able to construct grammatical sentences; (4) they are able to choose appropriate vocabulary in writing sentences; (5) they use mechanics in their writing. The class situation also improved include: (1) the students were active in the class; (2) the students had motivation in writing class because they had not been considered that writing is as a difficult task; (3) the students pay attention to the teacher’s explanation and they did not talk to another; (4) the students could finish assignments when the teacher asked to do it. In addition, the students’ mean score of writing also improved. The average score was 61.90 for pre test, 73.03 for test cycle 1 and 80.56 for test cycle 2. The mean score of test cycle 1 and cycle 2 is higher than passing grade which is 70.0.
Based on the result, it can be concluded the use of storytelling can improve students’ writing skill and class situation. Based on the findings presented above, the researcher expects that storytelling can be used in other writing classes.
