×This research aims at (1) identifying whether or not Facebook notes can
improve students’ skill in recount text writing; and (2) describing what happens
when Facebook notes is implemented in the writing classes.
This research used a classroom action research method. The research was
conducted in two cycles at the VIII C grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta.
There are two kinds of data: qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data
were collected by using observation, questionnaire, interview, field notes and
photographs. Then, the quantitative data were collected by using test (pre-test and
post-test). Qualitative data were analyzed by using four stages in Constant
Comparative Method as follows; comparing incidents applicable to each category;
integrating categories and their properties; delimiting the theory; and writing the
theory. The quantitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics.
The research findings show that the use of Facebook notes could improve:
(1) students’ writing skill of recount text (2) classroom climate of English class.
The improvement of students’ writing skill includes: (a) students were able to
improve their accuracy in using proper words (b) students could write longer
sentences using Facebook notes; (c) students were able to use simple past tense
correctly; (d) students were able to write recount text coherently; (e) students’
mistakes in spelling and punctuation reduced. The classroom climate also
improved. The improvement of classroom climate includes: (a) the students felt
enjoy and no pressure in doing the writing exercise; (b) students were more
enthusiastic in joining the lesson; (c) the students could spend shorter time when
they were asked to write; (d) students were able to finish their writing individually
and independently; (e) the students were active in writing class. Besides the two
findings above, there were other findings as follows: (3) The students felt
motivated in joining the teaching learning process; (4)They greeted and kept the
communication with the researcher outside the class; (5) They asked the
researcher to teach them longer.
The researcher come to the conclusion that Facebook notes are able to
improve the students writing skill and the classroom climate of English Class.
Facebook notes is a media which has a great potential as an aid to develop writing
skill and can provide a kind of activities in teaching and learning process.
Therefore teachers can use Facebook notes to overcome the students’ problems in
learning writing and to improve classroom climate of English class.
