A Comparative Study on Teaching Reading Through Structured Problem-Solving Technique and Send-A-Problem Technique (an Experimental Study at the Tenth Grade Of SMA N 2 Boyolali in The 2011/2012 Academic Year)

× ABSTRACT The aims of this research are to investigate: (1) whether there is a significant difference in reading skill achievement between the students taught using structured problem-solving technique and those taught using send-a-problem technique of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Boyolali; (2) whether structured problem-solving technique is more effective than send-a-problem technique to teach reading. The method used in this study is an experimental method (comparative study). This research was conducted on April until July 2012 in the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Boyolali in the academic year of 2011/2012. The writer took the sample by using cluster random sampling. The students are divided into X-1 who belongs to the experimental group and X-4 who belongs to the control group. The research instruments used to collect the data in this study is test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The computation of the data shows that: (1) the t-observation (to) is 0.0632 consulting the t-table (66, 0.05) = 1.960, the writer finds that to is higher than tt. It is concluded that there is significant difference on reading achievement between experimental and control groups; (2) the mean of the group of students who are taught using structured problem-solving technique is 70.99, while that of those who are taught using send-a-problem technique is 64.55. It means that teaching reading skill using Structured Problem-Solving technique is more effective than using Send-a-Problem technique especially for the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Boyolali in the academic year 2011/2012. Therefore, it is recommended that: (1) teachers apply Structured Problem Solving technique in teaching reading; (2) future research may conduct the same kind of research with different sample and condition.
