× ABSTRACT This action research is aimed at improving the students’ reading comprehension. Prior to the research, the students showed low reading comprehension. After identifying the problem and root of the problem, considering students’ characteristics as well as several theoretical review, WebQuest was chosen to overcome the problem. This action research is then focused in finding out whether or not WebQuest can improve students’ reading comprehension. In addition, to find out whether or not WebQuest can improve the classroom climate in reading class. The method of the research is action research. The subject of the research is the students of SMP Negeri 5 Surakarta in the ninth grade which has 37 students. The research was conducted from July, 5, 2011 to October, 14, 2011 at SMP Negeri 5 Surakarta. It was carried out in two cycles including 6 meetings. There were series of steps in each cycle, namely identifying problem, planning, implementation, observation, reflection, and revising the plan. The techniques for collecting the data were: 1) observation; 2) interview; 3) questionaire; 4) test; and 5) diary. There are many teaching techniques that may be helpful for students in learning English but based on the result of this research, it is proven that teaching reading in elementary students by using WebQuest simultaneously improves students’ reading comprehension in: 1)Finding the main idea, 2)Finding the supporting idea, 3)Finding the meaning of words, 4)Finding the reference and 5) Finding the detail information, and clasroom climate. However, it is worth to note that using WebQuest is effective and efficient if the activities and material in WebQuest involves the students. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers should be creative to use various material resources and create an interesting form of WebQuest in teaching reading so the students are interested and actively involved in teaching and learning process. In addition, the improvements of students’ reading comprehension can be seen from the improvement of the mean score. The mean score of pre-test was 6.05 and it increased to 6.76 in post-test cycle 1 and it increased again to 7.68 in post-test cycle 2. The result of post-test in cycle 2 is higher than KKM (7.01). From the result of the test and the observation, it showed that after the researcher conducted the research, there was significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension. The students’ achievement increased in every cycle. WebQuest can also improve the clasroom climate including the students’ participation and students’ motivation in the class. This can be seen from the students’ attitude in joining all activities during the research.
