× ABSTRACT Non-performing loans are loans with certain risks caused by debtor’s failure to perform his/her obligations. The failure of credit is a failure or delay of the debtor in restoring obligatory principal and interest rate. In banking activities, non-performing loan could be affected by internal as well as external factors, of the problem sought how efforts to reduce non-perfoming loan bank. The aim of this research is to describe how the performance of credit expansion in PT. Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk. Branch of Solo measured by using the ratio of non-performing loans, what caused the occurrence of non-performing loans, and what efforts pursued in dealing with non-performing loans during 2008, 2009, and 2010. This research is made on the basis of comparison between theories obtained and practice conducted in PT. Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk. Branch of Solo. In this research, the writer use the primary and secondary data method. To support the data collection, the writer using interviews method which was done by asking to the head of a particular unit directly, and observation method that conducted by observe to the object examined. Meanwhile, the discussion methods that used by writer is descriptive discussion, which means discussion of credit products, outstanding the number or amount of credit given, and the number of debtors distributed credit. Based on the analyzing of data, PT. Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk. Branch of Solo set policy to the categorization of credit, as follows: Pass, Special Mention, Substandard, Doubtful, and Loss. The category of Pass is 0 day, Special Mention is 90 days, Substandard is 180 days, Doubtful is 270 days, and Loss is more than 270 days. The result of this research show that total amount of credit given and percentage of non performing loan during 2008 is 279.128.873.000 (1.86%), in 2009 is 336.024.643.000 (2.08%), and in 2010 is 416.404.085.000 (2.56%). It showed that the state of non-performing loans in PT. Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk. Branch of Solo less properly, for exceeding policy internal which is above at 1.5 %. The increase in that of 0.20 (20.38%) in 2009 and 0.23 (23.92%) in 2010. Nevertheless the amount of non-performing loans from year to year is still under the utmost limits as stipulated by the IndonesianCentralBank of 5 %.
