× This research aims at: 1) identify whether the optimalization of the application of Macromedia Flash in Contextual Teaching and Learning enhance students’ writing skill of recount text, and 2) describe the classroom climate when Macromedia Flash in Contextual Teaching and Learning is applied in the Writing class of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu Karanganyar. The method used in this research is a collaborative action research which was conducted in two cycles at the eighth grade class of SMP Negeri 3 Colomadu Karanganyar from March 16th to June 6th 2012, in which in the first cycle there were 4 meetings and in the second cycle there were 3 meetings. Each cycle consisted of four steps: planning, implementing, evaluation, and reflection. The research data were collected by using observation, questionnaire, interviews, field notes, photographs, and tests. The qualitative data were analyzed through assembling the data, coding, comparing, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by using a descriptive statistic technique. The research findings proved that the application of macromedia flash in contextual teaching and learning could improve the students’ writing skill of recount text and the classroom climate during the teaching learning process. The final result of the tests showed that the students’ mean score had increased from the pre-test to the post-test. In the pre-test, the students’ mean score was (66.70), the test in cycle 1 was (69.78), while in the post-test in cycle 2 their mean score was (79, 83). The pre-test and the post-test 1 result were still below the minimum standard of the school (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum/ KKM), which is (7.0). Meanwhile the mean score of post-test 2 was above the passing grade of the school. The researcher finds that this research could improve students’ writing skill and the classroom climate. The application of Macromedia Flash in Contextual Teaching and Learning become one of appropriate ways in applying media and method in teaching writing.
