×The objectives of the research are to clarify whether: (1) QAR is more
effective than Guided Reading to teach reading comprehension for the eighth grade
students of SMP N 1 Ngemplak in the academic year of 2012/2013; (2) reading
comprehension of the students having high self-confidence is better than reading
comprehension of students having low self-confidence; and (3) there is an interaction
between teaching strategies and students’ self-confidence in teaching reading for the
eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Ngemplak in the academic year of 2012/2013.
The research was carried out at SMP N 1 Ngemplak Boyolali, from July 2012
to September 2012. The research method was experimental. The subject of the
research was the eighth grade students of VIII-A as experimental class who were
taught using QAR strategy and the eighth grade students of VIII-B as control class
who were taught using Guided Reading strategy. Each of them consisted of 32
students. The research instruments consisted of students’ self-confidence
questionnaire and a reading test. The self-confidence questionnaire and reading test
were valid and reliable after they were tried out in class VIII-C of SMP N 1
Ngemplak Boyolali. The data were the result of reading test and analyzed by
multifactor analysis of variance 2 x 2 (ANOVA). Then, it was analyzed by using
Tukey test.
Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings are: (1) QAR
strategy is more effective than Guided Reading strategy to teach reading for the
eighth grade students of junior high school; (2) The reading achievement of students
having high self-confidence is better than that of those having low self-confidence;
and (3) There is an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ selfconidence.
Based on the research findings, the conclusion is that QAR strategy is an
effective teaching strategy for teaching reading to the eighth grade students of SMPN
1 Ngemplak especially for students with high self-confidence.
The result of the research implies that the use of QAR strategy can be
effectively used to improve students’ reading comprehension. QAR makes students to
actively participate in teaching and learning process.
