×This research aims at: (1) identifying whether and to what extent
WebQuest Technique improves students’ reading comprehension, and (2)
describing the class climate when the teacher implements Web Quest Technique
in reading activity.
The method used in this paper is a collaborative action research. This
research has been implemented within two sequenced cycles at the seventh grade
students of SMP Negeri 1 Wonogiri in the second semester of the academic year
2011/2012. The research data were collected through observation, interview,
diary, photographs and tests (pre-test and post-test). Meanwhile, the data were
analyzed through constant comparative method and descriptive statistics.
The results of this research showed that students’ comprehension in
identifying descriptive text had improved and the changes of classroom climate
became more motivating. The improvement in students’ reading comprehension
includes: 1) The students could identify the referents of the pronoun found in the
text; 2) The students could find the meaning of the vocabulary on the text by the
help of guessing strategy; 3) Main idea of the text could be identified by the use of
skimming strategy; 4) The implied meaning from the text could be inferred
through the text analysis; and 5) Specific information from the text could be easily
found by the use of scanning strategy. The final result of the tests showed that
their scores were improving in the mean score; from 70.40 (pre-test) to 93.07
(post-test). It was above the minimum standard of the school (Kriteria Ketuntasan
Minimuml/KKM), which is 80.00. Related to the improvement in the class
climate, the research findings showed that 1) the students no longer needed the
material book since they used the eBook as their learning media; 2) the students
gave more attention even they attentively read what their friend was reading; 3)
The students found the meaning by themselves while they were reading the text
before the teacher asked them to have to; 4) students analyzed the text once they
read, dealing with the comprehension indicators; 5) the students could read the
text with better comprehension on it within the same time allotment; and 6)
Students’ interest on laptop was supported so that finally they were attracted to
learn more.
