|Abstrak||:||Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd. Drs. Martono, M.A. The objectives of this research are to identify whether interactive reading multimedia can improve students’ reading competence, and to describe the class situation when interactive reading multimedia is used in the teaching and learning process of reading competence in the class. The subject of the research was the first grade of SMA N 1 Purwareja Klampok 1, Banjarnegara in the academic year of 2011/2012. This was conducted in two cycles: the first cycle consisted of three meetings, and so was the second cycle. The procedures of the research consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. To collect the data, some instruments namely: tests, questionnaire, interview, and class observation were used. To analyze the quantitative data which were taken from the result of students’ score, the researcher applied a descriptive statictics to know their enhancement in reading. Meanwhile, the researcher employed three action steps of data analysis: (1) reducing the data, (2) presenting the data, and (3) making the conclusion to analyze the qualitative data. The result of the research shows that (1) interactive reading multimedia could enhance students’ reading competence in term of raising students’ achievement in the case of finding out (a) explicit information, (b) reference of pronouns, (c) communicative purpose of the author, (d) words’ meaning, (e) main idea in the paragraph, and (f) implicit information in the text; (2) Interactive reading multimedia could enhance class situation, in term of (a) the students’ attention that make them concentrate on the lesson, (b) their participation and interaction when having and responding teacher’s questions, (c) the motivation to join the teaching and learning process in the class. The research comes to the conclusion that there is a significant improvement of the students in reading competence using the interactive reading multimedia. Therefore, the interactive reading multimedia can improve the students’ competence in comprehending English texts. Based on the result of the research, it is recommended that the teachers and the students should use the interactive reading multimedia as one of good alternative multimedia in teaching reading in the class.|
