A Comparative Study on the Ideational Meaning of Song Lyrics Entitled “Home” by Chris Daughtry and “Home” by Michael Buble (Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics Study)

× 2012. This research attempts to find out the ideational meaning employed in the texts of song lyric expressing opinion being far away from home. The research applies qualitative descriptive method with total sampling technique. This research also uses primary and secondary data. The primary data are in the form of lexicogrammar, cohesion, and texts structure in the texts as primary data and the context of text as secondary data within the frame of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The data and source of data of this research were two texts of lyric entitled “Home” by Chris Daughtry and “Home” Michael Buble. The results show that both texts apply the similar results in text structure and theme, but also different in transitivity system. The research findings also show that the logical relation of both groups of text is in accordance with the nature of English Language. The correlation of conjunctive relation results the staging structure. All the texts have the same text structure categorized as elegy poem genre. The dominance of simplex nominal groups in all texts is also dominated by presence of simplex in the verbal groups. The ideational meaning analysis of both texts of different writers is obviously influenced by many aspects. Therefore, the researcher recommends the other researchers to consider the writer’ cultural background and the context of each text. Due to the similarities between song lyric and poem, the researcher also recommends the others to consider the metaphor in analyzing song lyric.
