× The objectives of the research are: (1) to examine whether and to what extent the use of dictogloss model in teaching writing is able to improve the writing skill of the students; and (2) to describe the strengths and the weaknesses of using dictogloss model in teaching writing. The research was conducted from April 2010 to June 2010 at SMP Negeri 1 Gesi, Sragen. The subject of the research was the students at Class 8D of SMP Negeri 1 Gesi Sragen in the academic year of 2009/2010. The research method was Classroom Action Research which was conducted in three cycles. The data were collected qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were collected by using the techniques of observation, questionnaire, interviews/ conferencing. To collect the quantitative data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test. The researcher analyzed both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using Constant Comparative Method. The quantitative data were analyzed using non independent t-test and descriptive statistics to calculate the mean scores of the Pre-test, Post-test 1, Post-test 2, and Post-test 3. The implementation of dictogloss model in the teaching of writing can improve the students’ writing competence. It could be seen in the following indicators: (1) increasing the ability to use the content correctly; (2) increasing the vocabulary mastery; (3) improving the skill of organizing the text; (4) improving the grammar; and (5) increasing the skill of using the correct mechanics. Based on the data, the use of dictogloss model can increase the students’ mean score from Pre-test to Post-test 1, Post-test 2, and Post-test 3. The mean score of the pre-test was 62.81, the mean score of the post-test in Cycle 1 was 65.70, the mean score of the post-test in Cycle 2 was 67.66, and the mean score of the post-test in Cycle 3 was 71.33. Meanwhile, the mean score in terms of content had improved from 67.97 to 71.50, 73.80, and 82.80, the vocabulary had improved from 63.67 to 64.50, 68.20, and 71.90, the organization had improved from 58.98 to 63.30, 66.00, and 68.80, the grammar had improved from 60.22 to 64.80, 65.60, and 67.70, and the mechanics had improved from 62.80 to 64.50, 64.80, and 66.00. Furthermore, the strengths of using dictogloss model are: (1) making the learning atmosphere more attractive; (2) enabling the students to increase the knowledge of writing a narrative text; (3) making the students understand more detail about constructing a text if it is compiled with other learning media. Meanwhile, the weaknesses are: (1) requiring a longer time in the teaching and learning process; (2) limiting the students’ understanding of the text if the vocabulary is limited; and (3) imitating and copying the text for some slow learners.
