×For the second time in 2009 this nation a big agendain the fields of
politics, namely, direct presidential elections. Political discourse in particular the
national leadership becomes an important issue that is always discussed among
any in this republic. In general the whole of society expects attendance figure of a
leader who can bring change for the better for the country. But that hope would
seem difficult to materialize, as it appears pragmatic attitudes of political elites to
pursue power, so that national politics reduced to a mere struggle for power.
Like do not want to miss to highlight the events surrounding the height of
the political situation in the republic, Butet Kertaredjasa publicly known as a
theater artist, commented through a collection of writings on the column Celathu
Butet in attendance at the Sunday edition of the daily Suara Merdeka. In this
column contains comments or criticism is framed in the perspective humor writers
in every actual incident that happened, but this does not reduce the depth of
content that would be disclosed. Butet Kartaredjasa apparently has chosen this
way to invite the reader ponder the question or the phenomena that occur in
society with ease. Therefore in this study will look at how political issues related
to national leadership in Indonesia ahead of the implementation of the 2009
presidential election is displayed in the column Celathu Butet.
Therefore, through a descriptive-qualitative method, this study aims to
find out what kind of discourse, in political context, by the writer of the Celathu
Butet opinion column, in the Sunday editions of The Suara Merdeka Daily,
associated with the national leadership. This study employs discourse analysis
method of social cognition theory by Teun A. van Dijk which consists of analysis
of text structure, social cognition, and social context. The researcher in this study
only uses two analyses: the text structure analysis and analysis of social context.
The findings of structure analysis show that the writer of the column gives
a negative appreciation and constructions to the nowadays-national leadership.
This negative appreciation and construction is drawn from the fact that the
politicians have a less understanding related to their political role and only take
advantage of the direct presidential election arena as a venue for contestation to
gain power and money. Two discourses arise from this political environment,
first, about the low level of public trust to politicians or to the next elite leaders.
Second, the direct presidential elections signified merely as a mean to take power,
not to gain sympathy or people support for a better democracy. Moreover, the
findings of social context analysis show that the negative construction is caused
by the dynamic development of democracy in Indonesia has not touched the
substance of democracy itself and the link between the achievements in
development of democracy and the effectiveness of national leadership
performance during this period which are considered low.
