×This research was conducted to know the differences of command expressions which are uttered by male and female characters in the American TV-series entitled Brothers and Sisters: Season 1, Episode1-12. It was also carried out to explain how male and female characters use Politeness strategies. Moreover, this research was made to know the speakers’ reason in relation to the speakers’ gender when they use such particular strategies in expressing the command expressions. This research uses socio-pragmatic approach. It is a descriptive qualitative research, which took purposive sampling technique in collecting the data. The data of this research were taken from the dialogues of Brothers and Sisters: Season 1, Episode1-12 which contain command expressions. Firstly, the data are divided based on the speakers’ genders and then classified by using Politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson. The first finding of this thesis shows that male and female characters in the TV-series express their command differently. Female characters tend to use non-verbal actions more than male characters do. Female characters add ‘please’ in most of their command expressions to make the command sound polite. There are two data found in this thesis, and nine of the data are uttered by male characters. Nine of them use Bald-on Record strategy when expressing their command to the listener, while there are only three data containing command expression which are uttered by female characters. The last finding shows that the gender of the speaker influences the choice of Politeness strategy. Female characters in this TV-series use more polite strategies than male characters do. There are three data found which using positive politeness strategy, five data which using negative politeness, and two data which using off record strategy. It happens because female characters in this TV-series are depicted to be more emotional than male characters.
