An Error Analysis On The Surface Strategy In Descriptive Text Writing Made By The Eighth Grade Students Of Smp N 1 Mojolaban In The 2012/2013 Academic Year

×This research aims to: (1) find out the types of errors on the surface strategy
made by the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Mojolaban; (2) find out the percentage of
errors on the surface strategy in descriptive text writing made by the eighth grade of SMP
N 1 Mojolaban; and (3) find out the causes of errors made by the eighth grade students of
SMP N 1 Mojolaban.
The method used in this research is descriptive method. The research was
carried out to the eighth grade students of SMP N 1Mojolaban on September 16th, 2012.
From the population, there were 32 students of class VIII D taken as the sample by using
cluster random sampling. In collecting the data, the writer used writing test on descriptive
text. Then, the data are analyzed by using error analysis procedure which consists of
collecting the data, identifying students’ errors, classifying errors, explaining errors based
on the sources of errors, and evaluating errors.
The result of the study shows that the errors made by the students based on
surface strategy are classified into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.
The writer found 430 total errors consisting of 161 or 37.45% errors of omission, 97 or
22.56% errors of addition, 155 or 36.08% errors of misformation, and 17 or 3.95% errors
of misordering. Omission error is the most frequent errors made by the students. It is
followed by misformation error, addition error, and misordering error.
The factors causing errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP N 1
Mojolaban are: (1) Interlingual transfer which is caused by the interference of their
mother tongue with 96 errors or 22.32%; (2) Intralingual transfer which is negative
transfer within target language (English) with 331 errors or 76.98%; and (3) Context of
learning which is related to the classroom with its teacher and its material in the case of
teaching and learning with 3 errors or 0.7%. Hence, the teacher should minimize the
causes of errors by considering those errors and try to overcome students’ problem in
writing.
