Abstrak : Being a good reader, the students need some skills of reading. However, based on the pre-research that has been done by researcher in class VIIIG of SMP N 1 Jaten Karanganyar, they still got some difficulties to (1) find main idea; (2) mention detail information; (3) grasp vocabulary; (4) guess implicit meaning; and (5) infer appropriate reference. Accordingly, for the improvements of the students‟ reading comprehension skill, the implementation of appropriate approach in teaching reading is needed. Reciprocal teaching with its four strategy: predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarizing, therefore, is implemented to solve their problems in comprehending a written text. This strategy is applied in teaching reading activity by purpose to improve students reading comprehension. In reciprocal teaching, the students learnt how to predict the content of the text; clarify the difficult words or phrases; generate questions; and summarize the content what they had been read. The research that used is classroom action research. The data of this research were collected through (1) observation sheet, to obtain the information about the teacher's and the students' activities and performance during the implementation of reciprocal teaching (2) field notes, to note the data beyond the coverage of the observation sheet,(3) test, to measure whether the students had made progress in reading comprehension, and (4) questionnaire, to collect information from the students whether the strategy implemented could motivate them in reading during the teaching and learning process. The result of the research showed that reciprocal teaching was effective way to improve the students' reading comprehension ability. The improvement can be seen as follow; the result of pre-test was 5.7; 6.7 in the test of Cycle 1; and 7.6 in the test of Cycle 2. Besides, the technique was able to motivate students to be active during teaching learning. Based on the findings, it is suggested that teachers use reciprocal teaching as one of alternative ways to improve and motivate students in teaching reading comprehension. It is also recommended that the students implement reciprocal teaching as a learning strategy to practice their reading comprehension. Moreover, future researchers are suggested that they conduct a similar study involving higher or lower levels of students such as the nine and the seven year students of junior high school level as the subject of the following research.
