×This research was conducted to analyze the report verb „said‟ translation in The Old Man and The Sea novel found in the two Indonesian-translated versions novel translated by two translators: Dian Vita Ellyati and Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat. The objectives of this research are to find out the translation techniques employed by Dian Vita Ellyati and Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat in translating the report verb „said‟ as well as the translation qualities of report verb „said‟ in terms of the accuracy and the acceptability levels. The descriptive-qualitative method is applied to this research. There are two data used for this research obtained by using content analysis, and having interview with the raters. The content analysis is used to collect the first data that are the report verb „said‟ and its translation which would have been observed to find out the translation techniques. Content analysis method was done by reading the source of data that was in the form of documents; the original novel and two translated versions novel, and it was found 27 report verb „said‟ translation from each translated version novel, thus the total data are 54 data. Then, the interview was done in order to gain the second data that are the scores of accuracy and acceptability levels of report verb „said‟ translation which would have been analyzed to find out the translation qualities. The findings of the research are as follows: (1) The findings of the research in terms of translation techniques. The first translator, Dian Vita Ellyati employs 5 translation techniques in translating the report verb „said, namely: The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Assertive Speech Act, The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Directive Speech Act, The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Commissive Speech Act, The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Expressive Speech Act, The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Verdictive Speech Act. The second translator, Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat only applies 1 translation technique in translating the report verb „said‟ that is The Report Verb „said‟ Translated into Assertive Speech Act. (2) The findings of the research in terms of translation qualities. The report verb „said‟ translation done by Dian Vita Ellyati is accurate and acceptable. Whereas, the report verb „said‟ translation done by Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat is less accurate and acceptable. According to the results of the research, the researcher finds the differences of translation qualities, specifically on the accuracy level between those two translated versions novel. The researcher suggests that in order to achieve an accurate translation of report verb „said‟, the translators should pay attention to the context of situation and the speaker‟s intention. It is because the actual message which should be transferred in the target text lies in the report verb „said‟.
