The Translation Analysis Of Wordplay In The Film Mr.Bones

× The research focuses on the translation analysis of wordplay in the film Mr. Bones. The purpose of this research are (1) to describe the types of wordplay, (2) to explain the translation techniques employed by the translator to translate the wordplay, and (3) to assess the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and readability. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research and applies descriptive method. This research is designed as single embedded-case study. In collecting the data, the researcher applied total sampling technique, while in choosing the raters, the researcher applied puposive sampling technique. The data were obtained by using content analysis and questionnaire. In content analysis, the researcher collected the data by selecting dialogue in the film which contains wordplay. There are 20 data in this research. The researcher employed close and open-ended questionnaire distributed to three translation raters. The findings show that there are four types of wordplay found in the film Mr. Bones; they are homophony ( 2 data or 10 %), homonymy ( 4 data or 20%), paronymy ( 8 or 40%), and polysemy (6 data or 30%). Analysis on translation techniques shows that there are 5 techniques including pun rendered as non pun ( 9 data or 45 %), pun rendered as pun ( 1 datum or 5 %), ST pun is copied into TT pun ( 6 data or 30 %), pun rendered with zero pun ( 2 data or 10%), and editorial techniques ( 2 data or 10%). The analysis of the accuracy of the translation shows that 7 data (35%) are considered as accurate, 11 data (55%) are less accurate, and 2 data (10%) are inaccurate translation. The analysis on readability shows that 11 data (55%) are considered as readable, 4 data (20%) are less readable, and 5 data (25%) are unreadable translation. The technique that results in high level of accurate translation is pun rendered as non pun, while in the low level of accurate translation is pun rendered with zero pun. The technique that results in high level of readability translation is pun rendered as non pun. Meanwhile, the technique that results in low level of readability translation is source language pun is copied into target language pun.
