Abstrak : Historical events often support the author to create great work of literature. Arthur Miller is the one of greatest playwrights in this world. He takes Salem witchcraft trial as the topic of the story entitled The Crucible. This story is interpreted as the description of the circumstances of the America in 1950’s. His view toward the phenomenon about witchcraft trial can share many points of humanity. The objectives of this thesis are to describe how Salem witchcraft trial is represented in The Crucible, to explore society views toward Salem witchcraft trial, and to explore Arthur Miller’s view toward Salem witchcraft trial. This is a library research which employs descriptive qualitative approach. A library research is a research where the data are taken from books or the written document as the source to support subject matter of the research. While the descriptive qualitative is a way used in a research where the researcher provides all the descriptions about the subject of the research. The findings of the research are as follows: the first, Salem witchcraft trial is clearly represented as the unjust trial. There are some facts that can show the unfairness for some people. Those facts are found in the process before the trial, in the middle of trial and after the trial. The second, each person in society of Salem has certain view toward that trial. There are some pros and cons for the trial. The third, Miller has his own personal view toward the trial. Miller views the witchcraft trial as the analogy of the McCarthyism period. He can identify the analogous political motives behind both events in the period of Salem witchcraft trial and McCarthyism. The next is, he views Salem trial as a symbol of human right deprivation. Much evidences in that trial can allege that the trial ignores the human right by executing many innocent people. The last is, he views Salem trial as an illustration of moral decadence. This can be seen from the dominance of lies that can defeat all the truth.
