×The objectives of the research are: (1) to find out the errors in using cohesive devices in English writing essay made by the Libyan Students of Sebelas Maret University in the academic year of 2012/2013, and (2) to find out the causes of the errors in using cohesive devices in English writing essay made by the Libyan Students of Sebelas Maret University in the Academic Year of 2012/2013.
The research method is qualitative descriptive research. The sample is 25 Libyan students in Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. The procedures or steps of the data analysis are (1) data reduction, it is collection of a sample of learner writing essay; (2) displaying the data of errors identification of students’ writing essay; (3) summarizing the errors made by students, the causes, and the problem solving.
The research findings are as follows: (1) the result of the study shows that there are two errors of cohesive devices: conjunction and reference and there are four kinds of errors based on surface structure taxonomy: misformation, addition, omission, and misordering (2) the causes of errors are intralingual error: ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application, and false concept hypothesized. The errors imply that the Libyan students in Sebelas Maret University have weakness in cohesive devices especially in reference (misformation, addition, omission) the most error is omission and conjunction (miformation, addition, omission, misordering) the most error is misordering. Therefore, the result of errors in this study can be used as a basis for relevant planning and effective work as the individual help and remediation to improve understanding about cohesive devices.
