×This thesis analyzes the exercises of woman’s personal freedom of choice in life in the early twentieth century to the 1970s as reflected in Family Matters. The objective of the research is to give a description of how the exercise of woman’s personal freedom of choice in life is reflected in one of Kitty Burns Florey’s novel, Family Matters.
The data consist of main and supporting data. Family Matters published by Michael Joseph Ltd, 44 Bedford Square, London, Great Britain in 1981, was used as source of the main data which were everything important in the novel and related to the subject matter, such as dialogues, attitudes, ways of thinking, behaviors, narrations, etc. while supporting data were taken from other sources, like books, essays, websites, etc which could support the analysis.
To obtain the objective of the study, sociological approach, cultural approach, feminism approach and historical approach were applied. However, as this study worked on literary work, the structuralism point of view could not be omitted. Structuralism was only used to get the intrinsic understanding about what a literary work tells about. Sociological approach was used to describe the reality of American life and phenomenon that have been formed in the life that become the setting background of a literary work. Cultural approach was applied to describe the reality of American life and phenomenon, including events, norms and value that have been formed in American culture that become the setting of this literary work. Feminism approach was used to find out the social condition of the women in this novel. While the historical approach was applied to reveal the past memories and events in a certain period of time that become the setting background of the work.
Having analyzed Family Matters, it can be concluded that the exercise of woman’s personal freedom of choice in life in this novel are: to have premarital sex, to control their own body, to make decision in the family, to have a better career, and to be a single parent. Those five exercises of woman’s personal freedom of choice in life are represented through one of the main character –Elizabeth Jane Ruscoe or Betsy. She got it through hard efforts because she lived in the transitional period of feminist movement –in the 1970s- when American society splat into groups who wanted to keep the traditional values about women and those who supported feminism movement. Then she could exercise her personal freedom more freely unlike those women who lived in the years before the feminism ideas grew stronger and spread over. The social condition and its changes really play important role in shaping women’s personal freedom. Family Matters as one of American literary product reflected those exercises of women’s personal freedom of choice in life.
