×This research and development study aims to investigate (1) the quality of the existing guidelines of writing in junior high school, (2) the development of the practical guidelines of teaching writing in SMPN 4 Karanganyar Cntral Java using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition.
The research conducted through two stages; exploration stage and product development stage. The exploration stage covers; (1) literature review, (2) field study, (3) need analysis, and (4) developing prototype. The product development stage explains about; (1) developing draft of the guideline, (2) expert validation, (3) try out the guideline, and (4) the final draft of the guideline.
The finding of the exploration stage was obtained through several techniques like interview, observation, documment analysis and questionnaire distribution. Through the questionnaire distribution to six schools included in POKJA V Karanganyar Tengah, there was no certain writing guideline used to teach. They used textbook, syllabus and lesson plan as the guidance of teaching writing. Thus, based on the interview with the teachers, the writing guideline should be developed by accomodating which considered the need of the teacher and the students. The guideline prototype was developed by considering some aspects comprising theoretical theories of writing, CIRC and teaching writing to Junior High School and the implementation of teaching writing of descriptive, recount, and narrative texts. Then, it had been validated by the English teaching expert and tried thrice in class VIII A of SMP N 4 Karanganyar Central Java. Through focus group discussion that involved the researcher, the teacher, the expert and the students, the guideline prototype was changed and revised to be the final draft of writing guideline. Therefore, through the stages, it could be said that the writing practical guideline was feasible to be used by the teachers to teach junior high school students.
