× The objectives of the research were to find out whether: (1) CTL is more effective than ALM to teach speaking; (2) the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than those having low creativity; (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking. The research was conducted in SMP N 5 Karanganyar. The research population was the seventh grade students in the academic year of 2012/2013. The selected sampling technique was cluster random sampling that further generated two classes as the research samples covering 32 students of experimental class taught using CTL and 32 students of control class taught using ALM. The research instruments consisted of verbal creativity test and speaking test. The creativity test and speaking test were readable after they were tried out in another class. The data were the result of speaking test (post-test) that was taken after eight meeting treatments for each class. The data analysis was done by applying descriptive and inferential statistics (ANOVA and Tukey HSD test) to test the research hypothesis. The findings of the research show that: (1) Contextual Teaching and Learning is more effective than Audiolingual Method to teach speaking for the seventh grade students of SMPN 5 Karanganyar; (2) the students having high creativity have better speaking skill than those having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity in teaching speaking. Finally, the research findings imply that Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) is an effective method to teach speaking. The findings show that students taught using CTL have better speaking skill than those taught using ALM. Therefore, it is recommended for English teachers to apply CTL in speaking class.
