×The main objectives of the research are to identify whether: (1) Team Assisted Individualization is more effective than Direct Instruction to teach writing; (2) the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Magetan having high level of intelligence have better writing skill than those having low level of intelligence; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and intelligence to teach writing.
The research was done in SMA N 2 Magetan. The population of the research was the tenth grade students in the academic year of 2012/2013. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. The sample in the research was 60 students covering 30 students of A1 as the experimental class and 30 students of A2 as the control class. The research instruments consist of intelligence documentation and writing test about descriptive text which was designed by the researcher. Before the instruments were used, a try-out was done to know readability of the instrument. After treatment was given in eight meetings, the researcher conducted a post-test to get the research data. Having got research data, the researcher analyzed the data in terms of their frequency distribution, normality of the sample distribution, and data homogeneity. Then, the researcher used ANOVA test (multifactor analysis of variance) and TUKEY test to test the research hypotheses.
The results of the research shows that: (1) Teaching writing by using Team Assisted Individualization to the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Magetan is more effective than the one using Direct Instruction; (2) students who have high intelligence have better writing skill than the ones of those having low intelligence level; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ intelligence in teaching writing at the tenth grade students of SMA N 2 Magetan.
Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that Team Assisted Individualization is an effective method to teach writing viewed from the students’ intelligence at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Magetan.
