× This study is a research and development which aims at (1) describing the existing model of teaching reading for the eighth grade students of junior high school, and (2) developing a suitable model of teaching reading using computer-based task for the eighth grade students of junior high school. The research was done through two stages; exploration stage and product development stage. The exploration stage resulted; (1) the description of the existing teaching reading model used by the teacher, (2) the current use of computer in teaching, and (3) the need analysis of developing a model of teaching reading using computer-based task. Meanwhile, the product development stage explained; (1) the description of the prototype, (2) the tryout of the teaching model, and (3) the final product. Through some techniques of collecting data in the exploration stage, the information about the existing teaching reading used by junior high schools in Pemalang was collected. It revealed that the teacher did not apply a systematic teaching syntax in reading class. The social system, principle of reaction, support system, and effects of the model were also not in good circumstance. In addition, field study showed that the schools provide computers to support learning which can also support the development of the teaching model. Considering the quality of the existing teaching model and the schools’ potency, it was concluded that a model of teaching reading using computer was needed to be developed. In this case, computer-based task was selected as the support system. The product development included developing the model itself and the teaching guideline to implement the model. The process included prototype development, expert validation, and tryout of the product. The prototype was arranged based on the result of exploration stage. Then, it was validated by an expert and tried out three times in VIII B of SMP Negeri 2 Pemalang. The model implementation was evaluated through discussion involving the teacher, the expert, the students, and the researcher. Each discussion resulted revisions for better implementation. In addition, questionnaires distributed to the students’ revealed that the students have positive response toward the model implementation. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the product was feasible to be applied in teaching and learning process.
