IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH PICTURE SERIES (An Action Research at the Eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 8 Madiun in the Academic Year of 2012/2013). A thesis. Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. November 2013. The objectives of the research are: (1) to find out whether picture series can improve the students’ skill in writing narrative text; (2) to describe the classroom situation when picture series is applied in teaching writing narrative text. The method used in this research was classroom action research. The research was conducted at class VIII D SMP Negeri 8 Madiun from April to June in the academic year 2012/2013. This research was conducted in two cycles. There were 3 meetings in the first cycle and 2 meetings in the second cycle. The research data were collected by using observation, interview, field notes, document analysis, photographs, and test includes pre-test and post test. The students’ test was scored by using scoring rubric based on ESL Composition Profile of Writing.The qualitative data were analyzed by assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and repoting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test and the post test. The result of mean score in pre-test is compared to the result of mean score in post-test to know the improvement. The research findings show that Picture Series could improve: (1) students’ writing skill and (2) classroom situation of English class. The improvement of students’ writing skill includes: (a) the students could develop their ideas; (b) the students could organize the narrative text starting from orientation, complication, and resolution; (c) the students could find appropriate vocabularies; (d) the students made fewer mistakes in constructing sentences using simple past tense; (e) the students also made fewer mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. The improvement of classroom situation includes: (a) the students paid full attention to the lesson and (b) the students were more active during teaching learning process. The improvement of students’ writing skill can also be seen from the improvement of mean score of pre-test (61.42), post test 1 (66.53), and post test 2 (78.72).
