× This study was conducted to find out whether or not there is a significant difference in reading achievement between the students taught using authentic texts and those taught using non-authentic texts. This experimental research is conducted from August 30 up to September 16, 2013 on the second grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Surakarta. The sampling used to draw the sample is cluster random sampling. The samples of this research are XI IPA3 students as the experimental group and XI IPA4 students as the control group. The experimental group is taught using authentic texts while the control group is taught using non-authentic texts. The stages of this research are giving a pre-test, a treatment, and a post-test. The data were obtained by conducting pre-test and post-test. They were then analyzed by using the t-test. As the requirement of the t-test, the data were tested using normality and the homogeneity test. The students’ pre-test scores are computed using the t-test. The result indicates that to = 0.66 is less than tt (46, 0.95) = 1.684, meaning there is no significant difference in reading achievement between the two groups before the treatment is given. After being given the treatment for about three meetings, a post-test is conducted. Before being computed using t-test, the data obtained from the post-test are tested using the normality and the homogeneity test. The normality test computation of the experimental and the control group using Lilliefors-Test shows Lo (0.152) < Lt (0.181) and Lo (0.136) < Lt (0.181), meaning the data are in normal distribution. The result of the homogeneity test computation using Bartlett-Test shows that ?o2 (0.01) is lower than ?t2 .95(1) (3.841), meaning the population are homogenous. The result of the t-test computation of students’ post-test scores shows to = 1.87 is higher than tt (46, 0.05) = 1.684, meaning there is a significant difference in reading achievement between experimental group taught using authentic texts and control group taught using non-authentic texts. Therefore, authentic texts are more effective to be used in teaching reading than non-authentic texts.
