× The objectives of this research are: (1) to reveal whether ostensive means can improve students’ vocabulary mastery; and (2) describe what happens to the class situation when ostensive means is applied to teach vocabulary. Ostensive Means is the way of teaching vocabulary by showing up things in the classroom or outside the class. The kinds of Ostensive Means are realia, picture, and body. This article deals with a Classroom Action Research of using Ostensive Means to improve vocabulary mastery at elementary school in Kebon 1 Ngawi, East Java. The study was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle is divided into four steps namely planning, action, observing, and reflection. There are two kinds of data namely qualitative data and quantitative data. Qualitative data are taken from observation, interview, and questionnaire. The quantitative data are taken from the pre-test, post-test in cycle 1 and post-test in cycle 2. The qualitative data are analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method and the quantitative data are analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The findings, it shows that: (1) The use of Ostensive Means in the teaching of vocabulary can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It could be seen in the following indicators: (a) The students can find the meaning of words; (b) The students can pronounce words; (c) The students can spell words; and (d) The students can use words correctly; (2) This action research also brought positive changes in the class situation in which the students pay attention to the lesson more seriously and become more active to do all activities and exercises given by me. Besides, the use of Ostensive Means in the teaching vocabulary could create an enjoyable atmosphere for the students because they could see attractive and different kinds of pictures during the lesson. The Ostensive Means presentation could create fun and exciting atmosphere. They became more enthusiastic and courageous to follow the lesson and take part in it more actively. Furthermore, the use of Ostensive Means is effective to increase the students’ participation in the lesson, motivation, and self-confidence.
