Improving The Students’ Competence In Descriptive Writing By Using Romantic Material (A Classroom Action Research In The Tenth Grade Of Sma Negeri Kebakkramat In The Academic Year 2012/2013)

× This research is written to identify that romantic material can improve the students’ descriptive writing skill and to identify the students’ attitudes to the teaching of writing by using romantic material in descriptive text. This research was done in SMA Negeri Kebakkramat, Karanganyar. The subject was the tenth grade students in the academic year of 2012/2013. Classroom action research was used in the research. It was conducted in two cycles. The procedure of the research consisted of identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the action, observing the action, reflecting the result of observation, revising the plan for the next step. The data of the research were collected by using observation, interview, document, questionnaire, and tests (pre-test and post-test). The analysis of the data was by comparing the scores of pre and post-test. The result of this research shows that romantic material can improve the students’ competence in writing skill and the students give positive and better attitude to the teaching descriptive writing by using romantic material. The improvement of the students’ writing can be seen from the test scores. The mean score of the test result is 67.1 for pre-test, 68.5 for post-test 1, and 89.8 for post-test 2. The researcher also identifies the strengths of using romantic material. First, romantic material can attract the students’ attitude to the teaching of writing. Second, romantic material can improve the students’ competence in writing. Third, it can build the students’ knowledge in writing. However, the researcher also finds some weaknesses such as the students get difficulty in arrangement of the noun phrase and they also get difficulty in ordering the sentence.
