×The objectives of the research are: (1) To explore the learning strategies used by the autistic student in writing English text at Al-Firdaus Junior high school of Sukoharjo in the Academic year of 2013/2014, (2) To explore the process of teaching writing English texts to the students in an inclusive class at Al-Firdaus Junior high school of Sukoharjo, in the Academic year of 2013/2014, (3) To investigate the impacts of learning strategies on writing English texts used by the autistic student to the teaching and learning process at Al-Firdaus Junior high school of Sukoharjo in the Academic year of 2013/2014.
The research was carried out at Al-Firdaus Junior high school of Sukoharjo. It was conducted from January to March 2014. The subject of the research is the student SA which is classified as a high-functioning autism student. He belongs to class VIIB, grade seventh. It is a case study research. The case study data are collected through document analysis, observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data are analyzed using interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman which covers data reduction, data display, drawing conclusion and verification. The research findings show that; (1) the learning strategies used by the autistic student in learning writing are memory strategies and cognitive strategies, (2) There are five components in the process of teaching writing to the student with high-functioning autism at Al-Firdaus Junior High School of Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/2014 covering: (a) teacher’s roles are as motivator, conductor, diagnosis expert, informant, and corrector; (b) learner’s roles are as recipient of outside stimuli transferred by his English teacher, listener and performer of activities in the classroom, and part of social activity and social interpersonal as one of the student of Grade VIIB; (c) teaching materials taken from Passport to the world English book and Internet; (d) particular English teacher’s strategies such as using pictures to teach meaning of words, utilizing white board to teach spelling; and (e) informal assessment to collect information about his autistic student’s writing progress, (3) There were many impacts caused by learning strategies used, both to the autistic student and to the teacher. The impacts on the student covering (1) the learning strategies used by the autistic student makes him very good in mastering vocabulary and their aspects of its, such as; meaning, spelling and use but this does not happen in short time, the teacher must work hard and be patient to teach him, (2) the instructions to the student must be delivered slowly and clearly. If the instructions is not delivered slowly and clearly, he will not do the instructions well. Besides, the impact to the teacher is the English teacher’s difficulties dealing with the teaching writing to the student with high-functioning autism in the seventh grades at Al-Firdaus Junior high school of Sukoharjo in the academic year of 2013/2014 are: (a) uncontrolled emotion causing a bad mood affecting him to do activities in the classroom, laughing out of load in the classroom, and lack of understanding of himself as part of a community in the classroom; (b) inclusive environment where heterogeneous students study together at the same class; and (c) the particular autistic student’s characteristics, i.e. problems of his cognitive impairment affecting his mastery of finding meaning of words.
The solutions accomplished by the English teacher of grade VIIB to overcome the difficulties in teaching writing: (a) appealing teaching strategies to keep the autistic student keen on joining writing English class; (b) fair attention between the autistic student and his peers to make the autistic student understand that he is as a part of a community in the classroom; (c) cooperation with autistic student’s special guidance teacher to deal with the inclusive environment; (d) drilling to improve the autistic student’s writing; (e) pictures to facilitate the autistic student got the meaning of the words; and (f) utilizing white board to lead spelling of the words.
Finally, it can be concluded that both learning strategies and teaching strategies influence each other, the teacher should pay more attention to the learning strategies in order to determine the appropriate teaching strategies to the students.
