Abstrak : This research focus on the three main characters’ moralities in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s TSL, they are Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. The research questions for this research are: 1.What are the moralities of the three main characters? and 2. What are the morality values in TSL? The purpose of this research is to answer the research questions above. The researcher uses Moral Philosophical Approach by using Franz Magnis Suseno’s five main principal standards of strong moral attitudes theory, which has been adapted from Immanuel Kant’s moral philosophical view as the main approach to answer those research questions. The analysis of the research is conducted in the form of analysis, which consists of the analysis of moralities of the three main characters and the morality values in TSL. The analysis through the moralities of the three main characters discusses the moralities of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth using the theory of Franz Magnis Suseno’s five main principal standards of strong moral attitudes. Likewise, the researcher applies it to the morality values in TSL, that makes whole of analysis becomes complete. To conclude, Hester Prynne is a protagonist who has the most positive and the strongest moral attitudes among the others three main characters in The Scarlet Letter. Although she is considered as a sinner based on the Puritan teaching, she can be categorized as the best characters because she can fulfill the five main standards of strong moral attitudes, namely honesty, willingness for being responsible, moral bravery, moral independence, and humility. The consequences of loosing these five main principal standards of strong moral attitudes, especially the result of loosing honesty in human attitudes are revealed through the characters of Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. Death is the fatal consequence of loosing the five main principal standards of strong moral attitudes, while respectful and honor is the result of keeping these five main principal standards of strong moral attitudes.
