× The objectives of the research are (1) to investigate out whether CBI could improve students’ speaking competence and (2) to give a description of how CBI was applied in the speaking class. This research is also designed to find out the strengths and the weaknesses of the implementation of teaching speaking using CBI to improve students’ speaking competence The research was carried out at Health Faculty, Kadiri University of Kediri from March to April 2010. The subject of the research was the second semester students of D4 midwifery. The data were obtained using several techniques including test, collaborative observation, questionnaires, and document. To analyze the quantitative data, I applied a descriptive statistic and to analyze the qualitative data, I applied constant comparative method. The results of the study show that: (1) CBI can improve the students’ speaking competence in terms of: (a) CBI can improve students’ speaking achievement, (b) CBI can develop students’ competence to express ideas using vocabulary and grammatical form, (c) CBI can develop students’ competence in expressing the idea, (d) CBI can develop students’ competence in using various kind of expression; (2) CBI can improve the teaching and learning process, in terms of: (a) CBI activity makes the classroom atmosphere more alive, (b) CBI activity can increase students’ participation in the speaking class, (c) CBI can improve students’ interest, motivation and self-confidence. The strengths: (a) CBI was collaboration, (b) CBI was student-centered, (c) CBI accommodate students’ interest, (d) CBI was motivating; while the weaknesses: (a) it is not easy to encourage the students who do not like English to involve in the activity, (b) the discussion in group work used their mother tongue, (c) the monitoring will be difficult if the activity is done outside the classroom. Related to the research findings above, the writer wanted to propose some suggestions for the English lecturer in the non-English department to apply CBI in teaching speaking. Lecturer should be creative in designing and exploring the materials and techniques that suitable with the students’ and curriculum need. The students are suggested involve in choosing topics and activities in order to meet their need and interest. The writer also suggests to other researcher to develop their points which can be obtained from implementation of CBI.
