× The research was conducted at Kalam Kudus Christian Playgroup of Surakarta; the subjects of the research were the nursery students in the academic year of 2011/2012. The research aims to (1) identify whether phonics improve the students’ reading ability and (2) identify the strengths and weaknesses of the implementation of phonics in improving the students’ reading ability The study applied action research technique to improve students’ reading ability through Phonics. Phonics is a technique to sound out letters in order to be used in reading. Action research is a way of reflecting on teaching which is done systematically by collecting data on everyday practice and analyzing it in order to come to some decisions about what the future practice should be. The research consisted of two cycles, with six meetings in every cycle; consisting of planning, action, observation and reflection in each cycle. There are two types of data in the research, namely the numerical and non numerical data which were collected by observation, interview, and test. The numerical data were analysed using descriptive statistics by finding out the mean of the scores in the test. The non-numerical data were analyzed using Constant-comparative techniques proposed by Strauss and Glasser consisting of the following steps: (1) comparing incidents applicable to each category; (2) integrating categories and their properties; (3) delimiting the theory; and (4) writing the theory. The results of the study showed that: (1) Phonics can improve students reading ability’ in terms of: (a) improving reading achievement and (b) improving students’ level of reading; (2) Phonics can improve classroom situation, in terms of giving structured way of learning, giving exciting and fun learning for students, rising students’ curiosity and motivation in learning, rising creativity of media in teaching; (3) Phonics can improve teachers performance of teaching. The result of the study showed that Phonics is beneficial to improve the students’ reading ability, class situation, and teacher’s performance of teaching. Therefore, Phonics is very potential to be applied in reading class and other skills-oriented class.
