×The objectives of the research are: 1) to reveal whether Talking chips is more effective than translation method to teach vocabulary to the Elementary School students; 2) to define whether the students who have high interest have better vocabulary mastery than the students who have low interest; and 3) to define whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest to teach vocabulary.
The research was conducted at Elementary School in Purwodadi from February-May. The population in this research is the sixth year students of Elementary School. The total number of population is 48 students coming from two classes. The sampling of the research is total sampling. The samples are VI A as the experimental group and VI B as the control group, each consists of 24 students. The techniques which were used to collect the data were questionnaire and vocabulary test. The two instruments were tried out to get valid and reliable items. The writer used normality test, homogeneity test in order to check whether or not the two groups were in normal distribution and homogeneous. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of ANOVA 2x2 and Tukey test.
The findings of this research show: 1) Talking Chips is more effective than Translation Method in teaching vocabulary; 2) The students having high interest have better vocabulary mastery than those having low interest; and 3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest.
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Talking Chips is effective for teaching vocabulary. The findings of this research imply that teaching methods had a strong influence on students’ vocabulary mastery. The application of Talking Chips gives effect for teaching vocabulary. In order to get optimum result and effect on students’ vocabulary mastery, English teachers are suggested to apply this method by considering students’ interest especially based on their interest.
