A Correlational Study between the Students’ Motivation and translation Ability in Reading Comprehension at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar in the Academic Year of 2013/2014. Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. 2014. This thesis is aimed to find out the correlation between (1) students’ motivation and reading comprehension; (2) students’ translation ability and reading comprehension; (3) students’ motivation and translation ability toward reading comprehension. The method that is used in this study is correlational study. The study was conducted in November 2014 at SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar. The population of this study is all the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar in the academic year of 2013/2014 which consists of nine classes. The total number of the population is 324 students. By using cluster random sampling technique, the writer takes class XI IPA 3 as the sample which consists of 36 students. The instruments to collect the data are in the form of questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to collect the data of students’ motivation while the test is used to collect the data of translation ability and reading comprehension. The techniques which are used in analyzing the data are Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation. The result of the study shows that in the level of significance α = 0.05 it is found that (1) there is a positive correlation between the students’ motivation and reading comprehension (rx1y = 0.576, to = 4.105 > tt = 1.70); (2) there is positive correlation between translation ability and reading comprehension (rx2y = 0.542, to = 3.756 > tt = 1.70), and (3) there is a positive correlation between the students’ motivation and translation ability simultaneously and reading comprehension (Ry12 = 0.666 and Fo = 13.125 > Ft = 3.32). From the results of the study it is also known that students’ motivation and translation ability are important factors that give contribution to reading comprehension. The students’ motivation gives 25.45 % effective contribution to their reading comprehension, and the students’ translation ability gives 19.86 % effective contribution to the students’ reading comprehension. While simultaneously the students’ motivation and translation ability give 45.31 % effective contribution to their reading comprehension. It means the increase of the students’ motivation and translation ability, either partially or simultaneously will be followed by the increase of the students’ reading comprehension. From the result of the study, it is known that the students’ motivation and translation ability are important factors that can improve their reading comprehension. Those two factors cannot be neglected and should be maintained and elevated in increasing the students’ reading comprehension.
