×This research is conducted by analyzing the directive speechacts in the
Sukarno’s speech texts found in the autobiography and the translated versions.
The aims of this research are to describe (1) the politeness strategies which are
implied in the directive speech acts in the Sukarno’s speech texts and the
translated versions, (2) the translation techniques which are applied by the
translators to translate the directive speech acts, and (3) the effects of the
translation techniques on the quality of the translation of directive speech acts in
the two translation versions.
This research belongs to a descriptive-qualitative research. The source of
data are documents, Sukarno’s speech texts in the autobiography, and informants,
three raters who assessed the quality of the translations. The data of this research
are the directive speech acts which are found in Sukarno’s speech texts in the
autobiography and the information about translation quality gained from the
informants. The methods of data collection are document analysis, questionnaires
distribution, and interview. The data were analyzed by using politeness theory
Brown and Levinson (1987) and translation techniques proposed by Molina and
Albir (2002).
It is found that there are four types of politeness strategy in the source text
and translations, which are bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative
politeness, and off-record. The analysis of translation technique indicates that both
translators applied 11 types of technique, which are literal translation,
amplification, reduction, modulation, established equivalent, transposition,
particularization, discursive creation, variation, borrowing and calque.
The analysis of translation quality shows that translation version II has
better quality, both in the aspects of accuracy and acceptability. Out of 44 data,
37data of translations of version II are categorized into accurate, and 7data are
less-accurate. In the aspect of acceptability, 36 data are categorized into
acceptable and 8 data are less-acceptable. Meanwhile, out of 44 data, 34data of
translations of version I are categorized into accurate and 10data are less-accurate.
In the aspect of acceptability, 35 data are categorized into acceptable and 9 data
are less-acceptable.
In both translations, it is found that some translations do not undergo shift
of politeness strategy and some other translations undergo politeness strategy
shift. The findings show that the equivalent of politeness strategies between the
source text and target text give positive effect on the translation quality.
However, it does not mean that the shift of politeness strategies is not allowed.
The shift on politeness strategy does not always gives negative effect on the
quality of the translation. Sometimes shift is needed to produce more natural
expression in the target language.
