×This study is based on the low of speaking skill of the tenth grade students
of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. The goal of this study is to find out whether
the movie discussion can improve students’ speaking skill. This study also
describes how the situation in class when movie discussion is being conducted in
class.
In implementing the study, the writer used a classroom action research. The
procedure of the research consisted of identifying the problems, planning the
action, implementing the action, observing or monitoring the action, reflecting the
result of the observation, and revising the plan for the following steps. The
research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings
including post test. The writer used qualitative and quantitative method in
collecting the data. The writer used field notes, photographs, interviews, and
document in collecting the qualitative data. For quantitative method, the writer
used test. The mean score of the pre-test was compared with the mean score of the
post-test. The qualitative data were analyzed by assembling the data, coding the
data, comparing the data, building interpretations, reporting the outcomes.
The findings of this research show that movie discussion can improve
students’ speaking skill. The improvement can be seen on the students’ speaking
skill in each criterion of speaking and also from the situation of the class. The
mean score of pre-test is 1.733 (5.779); and it improves to 1.957 (6.524) in the
post-test 1. It increases up to 2.109 (7.073) in the final post-test. From the result
of the tests, it shows that there is an improvement of students’ speaking skill. The
students enjoy the class more. They speak up freely in the group discussion.
