×This research was conducted to describe the illocutionary function of directive speech acts, to identify the translation technique applied and evaluate the effect of those toward the quality of translation.
This thesis is translation research. This research also belongs to comparative research. The method applied in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data are taken from the whole text of the novel The Old Man and The Sea written by Ernest Hemingway (SL) and its Indonesian versions Lelaki Tua dan Laut which is translated by Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat and The Old Man and The Sea which is translated by Dian Vita Ellyati.
The result of the research shows that there are five kinds of illocutionary function of directive speech acts. These include commanding 27 data (39.7%), requesting 18 data (26.5%), prohibiting 9 data (13.2%), suggesting 9 data (13.2%), and begging 5 data (7.4%).
The first translator, Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat, translated the directive speech acts using several techniques. The are Variation, Literal Translation, Linguistic compression, Linguistic amplification, Reduction, Generalization, Modulation, Variation + Transposition, Variation + Borrowing, Literal + Transposition, Literal + Borrowing, Linguistic amplification + Transposition, Amplification + Borrowing technique. Most of her translations is accurate, acceptable, and readable.
The second translator, Dian Vita Elliyati also translated the directive speech acts using Variation, Literal Translation, Linguistic compression, Linguistic amplification, Modulation, Literal + Transposition technique, Variation + Transposition technique, Variation + Borrowing technique, Literal + Borrowing technique, Linguistic amplification + Borrowing technique, Transposition + Adaptation technique, Linguistic Amplification + Adaptation technique, Variation
